Respite Care (RSPO)
Giving caregivers a well-deserved break while ensuring the people they love receive compassionate, familiar support in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties.
Who We Serve
Respite Care is available to individuals enrolled in Indiana’s Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) Waiver or Family Supports Waiver (FSW). It provides temporary relief for primary caregivers while ensuring the individual continues to receive quality support in a safe, familiar environment.
Where Services Are Provided
Respite care happens wherever the individual feels most comfortable. We meet people in the settings that work best for their needs and routines.
Individual's Home
Care provided in the person’s own home, maintaining routines and comfort in a familiar setting.
Caregiver's Home
Support can be provided at the primary caregiver’s home when that is the most practical arrangement.
Camp Settings
Respite during structured camp programs where individuals participate in activities with peer support.
Day Habilitation Sites
Respite provided within existing day program environments that the individual already attends.
Residential Settings
Short-term respite within residential habilitation environments for individuals who need overnight or extended support.

How It Works
Starting respite care is simple. We work with families and case managers to ensure everything is in place before the first session.
Referral
A case manager or family contacts us to discuss the individual’s needs and confirm CIH or FSW waiver enrollment.
Planning
We learn about the individual’s routines, preferences, and any specific care requirements. A caregiver is matched based on fit.
Respite Begins
Scheduled respite sessions start in the agreed-upon setting. Families receive updates and can adjust the schedule as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a respite session last?
Respite sessions are flexible and can range from a few hours to overnight or multi-day stays, depending on the individual’s service plan and approved hours. We work with the case manager to determine the right schedule.
Can I choose the caregiver for my family member?
We do our best to match individuals with caregivers who fit their personality, needs, and preferences. Families are encouraged to share what matters most to them so we can find the right match.
Is respite care covered by Medicaid?
Yes. Respite Care (RSPO) is a Medicaid waiver-funded service available through Indiana’s CIH and FSW waivers. There is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible individuals.
